About Coaching Imagine a friend who wants nothing more than your complete success. This friend always listens with interest to what you have to say, and gives you the feedback you need to make tough choices and changes. This is the essential job of a coach. We try to help you state the problem clearly and understand it. We help you plan an approach to solving it and executing that plan. As a coach, I believe that you already have the knowledge and skills you need for the solution; and my job is to help you bring out those skills and use them effectively. In addition to being a coach, I am licensed in three states as a psychotherapist. However, if you set up a contract with me for coaching, I will not be practicing psychotherapy with you. Although there are some similarities with coaching and psychotherapy, the focus in each is very different. Generally, when someone seeks out therapy they are having difficulty functioning. Often it is because they are suffering from some emotional or psychological problems. However, when someone thinks about hiring a coach he or she is generally handling professional and life responsibilities well. Yet, they are beginning to feel a need for support and focus to accomplish new goals and satisfaction. The client’s ability to function well and take responsibility is an important aspect of setting up “the coaching relationship” because the client will play the major role in creating their success. Most coaches often work over the telephone without ever meeting their client face to face. States or even oceans sometimes separate client and coach, yet they feel as if they are in the same room. At first it may seem unusual to work through issues with someone you can’t see, but almost everyone soon gets really comfortable. Gradually, the client begins to realize that their coach is committed to their success and is reading the tone of their voice as if they could read their face. This allows you to work wherever it is convenient and comfortable for you. Of course, if you happen to be in the same city, I would love to meet you face to face. But don’t let location limit you from finding “your perfect coach”.
